Surrounded by an incredible lunar landscape, the expanse of perfectly flat, compacted salt that gives the Capital of Utah its name has been the site, since the 1920’s, of the most daring land-speed records. Conditions of climate and geography found nowhere else in the world have made it the ideal setting for memorable feats. Land Speed Records runs open to a wide variety of vehicles, the so-called Speed Weeks, attract speed fanatics from all over the United States and, by now, from the rest of the world as well. During the week of September 2nd to the 7th, Bonneville fills up with biking enthusiasts, and the party begins, along with the racing, the competition and the attempts to push beyond the rules of speed, wind and space. We take a look at the history, technology and rational madness of riders and mechanics who work for years, in the hope of braking an absolute record for pure speed.
